Fiona + Ryan: Sir Francis Drake Wedding In San Francisco

They were born thousands of miles apart.  Raised in two very different cultures.  Despite the distance, their paths eventually crossed one day in San Francisco.  A day that changed their lives forever.  Some may call it fate, while others call it destiny.  You can call it whatever you like, but within 5 minutes of meeting Ryan and Fiona, you just know that they are meant to be together.  Forever.

Their wedding was held last Friday at the gorgeous Sir Francis Drake hotel in San Francisco. From start to finish, it was a beautiful wedding filled with special moments.  The kind that warm your heart.  Those closest to Ryan and Fiona couldn’t have been more sweet and welcoming.

Ryan and Fiona, you guys are perfection.  It was such a pleasure to be a part of your special day.  You are such a wonderful couple and I am excited to see how God will bless you and your future together.  Wishing you all the best (and then some).  Have an amazing honeymoon in Hawaii filled with fun, great weather and lots of relaxing.  ♥

A little bridal bling bling.

Fiona, you are gorgeous!

A few portraits of Ryan as he waits to see Fiona for the first time.

They were both so excited to see each other.  It was such a special moment.

Since Ryan and Fiona decided to see each other before the ceremony, we had plenty of time to walk around San Francisco for their portraits.

Many thanks to Nona Tai from Floral Design Studio for such beautiful flowers.

One of my favorites of the day.  Love.

A few more portraits after the ceremony in the lovely Sir Francis Drake lobby.

Their first dance.  Full of smiles and radiating love.

So many beautiful, heartfelt toasts.

A final cheers!  Congratulations Fiona and Ryan!

Sweetly Broken

I felt challenged.  Urged.  Pushed by God to do this.  To start my year off with Jesus as my focus.  So much of my life is centered around me.  My own little world.  My focus has been on other areas of my life instead of where it should be, centered on God.

A little over two weeks ago, our pastor at church encouraged us to be part of Awakening.  21 days of fasting, prayer and personal devotion.  17 days have passed.  17 days that have been inspiring.  And difficult.  Beautiful.  Testing.  Amazing.  A mix of feelings all rolled into one.

And it is changing me.  Changing me from the person I once was into the person I want to be.  The person God wants me to be.   Watching the process unfold and seeing how God is working in my life and in the lives of the people around me is something I don’t think I can put into words.  I’ll just say that for the first time, in a long time, my heart is full.  I’ve cast aside my doubts, worries and troubles and put all my trust in God.  For me, relinquishing control is one of the hardest things to do.  These 17 days have reminded me that I am not in command.  God is.  When he closes a door, there’s a reason.  When he opens one, there is a reason.  My doubt is not trusting in him.  I don’t ever want to say no to what God is leading me to do.

I’m posting this blog because I want to remember.  Remember exactly how I am feeling today.  I’m at a point in my life where I don’t just want to live.  I want to live with a purpose.  Live a life that is Sweetly Broken.

Matt - Amen!

Unwinding In Napa

He surprised me.  He told me when but not where.  “After Christmas, just us.  We need a few days to get away and just relax,” he said.  Never one to keep a secret, Matt wanted me to guess where.  He wore his poker face as I listed off places.  “You’ll just have to wait and see,” he said with a smile.

It’s our new Christmas tradition.  Instead of buying each other gifts that we probably don’t really need, we go somewhere.  Just the two of us.  Our schedules throughout the year are busy and often times don’t align.  I never get to see him as much as I would like to.  Spending time together is what matters most to me and I’m never one to turn down a trip.  So needless to say, I was excited for whatever he had planned.

It was a trip to Napa.  And I was thrilled.  I love Napa Valley and even though it isn’t too far away, we rarely make it up North to visit.  A few days away from it all was just what we needed.  Besides wine tasting and plenty of good food, I took a lot of pictures.  The Napa area has always had a special place in my heart photographically.  Years ago when we were in college, we came up to Napa for one of my photography classes to shoot.  It was one of those days I will never forget as I began my journey with photography.  My favorite subject matter in college was shooting anything abstract or graphically strong.  Hard lines.  Looking for subject matter in unlikely places.  Although the subject matter of my photography has dramatically changed, it was in these years of college and my love of the abstract that really helped me develop my own style.  My vision, my eye.  My perception through the lens of my camera has changed a lot over the years and my aesthetic continues to grow.  It reminded me of where I had been, showed me where I am now and helped me continue to dream of where I want to be in the future.

It was such a great trip; a chance to clear my head, relax and get ready for the year ahead!  Below are some of my favorites.

First stop…checking into the Avia Hotel in Napa.  This place was amazing.  The rooms were modern and chic with so many great details.

Every breakfast was spent at Bouchon.  I talked about this place in an earlier blog post found here.  Simply divine.

One of our favorite spots in wine country.  Castello di Amorosa. There’s castle in Napa?  Totally.  A little cheesy perhaps, but it really is beautiful.  And fun fact for all you fellow Bachelor fans out there.  As you may know, a few seasons ago, Jake and two girls came to this winery on one of the episodes.  According to the show, they spent the night here on the episode where they made Vienna look totally crazy.  But while we were here, we overheard one of the tour guides saying that they in fact never stayed overnight.  The whole thing was made up for TV.  So much for reality.  Too bad I’m still totally hooked on that show.  It seems to suck me in every.single.time.

This is after setting the self timer and running up a ramp like a crazy person to make it in the shot in time.  I just can’t seem to get over the fear of handing my precious camera to some stranger.  Instead, every picture of the two of us is either self-timed or with my point-and-shoot (which I will happily hand to someone else to take a picture of us).

One of my favorites from the trip.

I have a crazy obsession with doors.  All types of doors.  I have hundreds of pictures of all different kinds.  I especially like the door on the left side.  It was actually a door within a door which makes it doubly cool.

And two more snapshots of us.  Thanks to my hubs for a fantastic trip!

Happy Monday!

My Thursday.

I had another blog post planned for today but life intervened.  In an exciting way.  But first, a little backstory.

As most of you know, I started my photography journey a long time ago.  But the official birth of my business was this past year.  I’ve come a long way and still have a long way to go.  I’m constantly learning, trying to better my skills and grow.  Because I never want to become stagnant.  I want to continually challenge myself.  Take hold of the opportunities that come my way.  Find inspiration in all different places.

And then yesterday, something big happened.  The opportunity to meet and have lunch with Jamie Delaine.  She’s a wedding photographer from BC, Canada and she’s simply amazing.  Her photographs are beautiful.  Her words are poetic.  Her faith and love for Jesus is inspiring.  She’s one of my absolute favorites and having the chance to meet her is something I couldn’t turn down.

How you might ask, did this come to be?

A little over a week ago, Thirst Relief International announced their mentor auction.  Accomplished photographers from all over donating their time (a mentor session) and people/other photographers (like me) were able to bid on them.  Most of them were for one on one sessions at the annual WPPI convention this February in Vegas.  The purpose:  To raise money and awareness for a cause that is so important.  Access to clean water.  Many people in our world don’t have this luxury and end up drinking contaminated water which can lead to disease and death.  The numbers are alarming, but the good news is that it can be changed.  Through proper water filtration, lives are saved.  All the money raised from these auctions went to helping this cause.

I knew I wanted to get involved.  A great cause with the opportunity to meet someone I admire like crazy.  I wanted this so badly, I can’t even begin to tell you.

Last night, the auction ended.  And I won.  It was one of those i’m.so.happy.that.i.can’t.stop.smiling moments. I was already extremely excited for WPPI in a few weeks and being able to meet her is the icing on the cake!

Lori - Congratulations! I am thrilled for you and greatly impressed by the talented people who donated their time and talent to be auctioned for the benefit of such a worthy cause.

Happy Things: Blueberry Muffins, Funglish & Amazing Race

One of my new year’s resolutions was to blog more.  And seeing as we are already a week and a half into 2011 and this is my first post of the year, you might say I’ve failed.  But I prefer the term “late-starter”.  Life frequently seems to get away from me and my to do list seems to keep getting longer and longer.  It perhaps even puts Santa’s naughty or nice list to shame.  Sorry for the Christmas reference in January but I’ve still got Rudolph and Candy Canes on my brain.  I blame it on consuming tooooooo much sugar over Christmas.

To start 2011 off right, there will be a new and regular segment on my blog entitled Happy Things.  A semimonthly post on things that I love.  Things I adore.  Things that make me happy.

*First up, Bouchon’s blueberry muffins.  In fact, pretty much anything from Bouchon.  This adorable bakery reminds me of Paris.  From the sweet smells to the picture perfect pastries, I am obsessed with this place.  While up in Napa two weeks ago (blog coming soon), we frequented this bakery numerous times.  And now, even though we are back home and more than 95 miles away, I find myself trying to find a valid reason to drive back up North for more.

*I am a total sucker for a good board game.  Taboo, Scattegories and Uno Attack are all regulars of ours, but this holiday season was all about Funglish.  It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do, it’s a blast.  Hours upon hours were spent playing this game with our families over Christmas.  The result?  Some great memories and even funnier pictures (We get really into our game playing).

*We did it.  After watching obsessively for 17 seasons and dreaming of one day being a part of it, we finally applied.  Amazing Race is without a doubt our favorite reality show.  In fact, it’s our favorite show period.  We’ve always wanted to apply but things kept coming up that changed our minds.  For me, 2011 is about taking risks and going after what I want in life.  So we did.  We filled out all the forms and filmed our application video.  It was packed up and mailed off.  I was dreading the process of filling out endless amounts of questions and trying to jam everything about what makes us us into 3 minutes of video but it was a lot of fun.  We laughed and enjoyed it as you can see from a few of the video screen shots below.  We did all that we could and now we will wait and see what happens. In the meantime, I will be crossing my fingers and thinking happy thoughts!

Happy Monday!
